A Pursuit for a More Equitable UN Security Council: An Indian Perspective

India, a dynamic democracy and an emerging global power representing 17.78% of the world's population, stands at a pivotal moment. In its quest to claim a prominent role on the international stage, it confronts an outdated obstacle—the dominance of veto-wielding nations within the United Nations Security Council (U.N.S.C). Established in the wake of World War II, this framework has become an anachronism, obstructing India's ambitions and undermining the ideals of equality and justice that it passionately champions. 
India's objectives regarding the veto power dynamics are unequivocal: to engage fully and effectively in the formulation of the global order. The nation seeks a position at the decision-making table where choices that influence its future, as well as that of humanity, are determined. This goal is not solely driven by self-interest; it is rooted in a profound commitment to multilateralism and the pursuit of a more just and equitable world. 
 A legacy of colonial power dynamics:
 However, the current structure of the UN Security Council, dominated by five permanent members with veto power, poses a substantial challenge to India's aspirations in the face of this veto-centric authority. It is noteworthy that Europe, with approximately 10% of the global population, is represented by two veto holders. This antiquated system allows a select few nations to impede progress on critical issues, perpetuating geopolitical inequalities. It exemplifies a form of authoritarianism by the five veto-holding countries, marginalizing a nation that constitutes 17.78% of the global population, alongside the entire African continent, which represents 18.3% of the world's population.
India's Pursuit of a Seat at the Table:
 Recent events serve as powerful reminders of ongoing injustices. From the conflicts in the Middle East to the Rohingya crisis, the use of veto power has often protected allies while obstructing significant action, resulting in the silent suffering of millions. This blatant neglect of human rights and international law undermines the very principles upon which the United Nations was established, complicating India's ambitions in the face of the dominance of veto holders and threatening global stability.
 India remains steadfast in its commitment to multilateralism. It plays an active role in UN peacekeeping operations, provides financial support to UN initiatives, and consistently champions a rules-based international order. This proactive involvement reflects India's intention to act as a responsible global player, positively impacting the international community. Nevertheless, India's aspirations are continually hindered by the antiquated system dominated by veto powers. 
 A Call for Comprehensive Reforms:
To effectively tackle these challenges, it is crucial to reform the Security Council to improve its representativeness and democratic character. Expanding permanent membership to include deserving nations like India is vital. This adjustment would not only reflect the changing global landscape but also promote a more equitable and inclusive decision-making process. 
Additionally, either abolishing the veto power entirely or limiting its use to matters of existential threat could reduce its misuse and foster greater consensus. Such reforms are essential for advancing India's aspirations against the dominance of veto-wielding nations, paving the way for a fairer and more just global order. 
The international community must recognize the fundamental flaws in the current system and work towards meaningful reform. India's voice should be strengthened, its contributions acknowledged, and its aspirations realized. Only then can the United Nations truly reflect its founding principles and act as a source of hope for all nations. As the momentum for transformation in favour of India grows, it is concerning that some Western powers, with a colonial mind-sets, attempt to undermine India on trivial grounds while remaining silent on severe human rights violations elsewhere, as highlighted by Mr. Turk's unwarranted statements. The issue is as follows: 
Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, originated from Austria recently made critical comments regarding India's domestic issues, which raised alarms about specific policies and legal frameworks. His statements were perceived as an inappropriate intrusion into India's sovereignty, prompting significant backlash. In reaction, Arindam Bagchi, the official spokesperson for India at UNO, delivered a strong rebuttal, categorically dismissing Türk's remarks. He emphasized that India is a dynamic democracy with well-established institutions and a deep commitment to human rights. Bagchi pointed out that selective criticism, lacking an understanding of the local context, is counterproductive. He stressed the importance of external entities respecting India's sovereignty and avoiding biased narratives. His response underscored India's determination to defend its dignity on the international stage. Many regarded Bagchi's remarks as a robust diplomatic counter, reinforcing India's autonomy in decision-making. His statement conveyed a clear message that India will not accept unfounded accusations regarding its internal affairs.
A Call to Action:
 India's quest for a more just UN Security Council extends beyond simply asserting its rightful position; it aims to establish a more equitable and effective global security system. The objective is to ensure that the perspectives of all countries, irrespective of their size, are recognized in decision-making processes. The moment for reform is now. This serves as an urgent call to action, including measures such as reducing contributions and withdrawing peacekeeping forces operating under the UN. It is essential that we come together to foster a global atmosphere where decisions impacting all are made collectively; otherwise, the United Nations may face a fate similar to that of the League of Nations.
